The following was sent in by Sandie Brock:

Friends, family, acquaintances….
Some have you may have known us for 20 years or more and never knew that we spent over 15 years of our lives touring in a Christian rock band. Oh my! It seems your past does catch up with you as we are now having a reunion date at a large festival in IL in a mere few weeks!
Attached you will find information on a preview performance being held in Cincinnati on Tuesday, June 28th. We didn’t want anyone to wonder why we never mentioned this show so here it is. If you are scratching your head and saying, “no way, I have to see this” go on and read below. The rest of you can pretend we never mentioned it.
Ideally we would love to gather you all in with us for free and enjoy this experience. Our reality is the costs for this reunion adventure are stacking up fast and we’re hoping to break even. This is a fund-raising event to underwrite some of the costs involved. It is a small venue so we need every seat sold. Thank you for understanding and thank you for your support!
looking forward to the fun,
Owen & Sandie

Darkness to Light Training Program

Posted by Vineyard Central on May 18, 2011
friends of vc / 1 Comment

You are invited (along with your spouse or supportive family member) to a special “prevention and response” training program for adults that minimizes risk and opportunity for childhood sexual abuse. The focus is not on the ugliness, but on what we can do to avoid and minimize the opportunities.  This training is about education, empowering and giving resources.

The organization is called Darkness to Light.  The training program itself is called “Stewards of Children”.  You can go to www.d2l.org for more information on this organization and training.  Sandie Brock will be facilitating.

The training will be Thursday, June 2, 6:00-9:00pm at the Speckled Bird Café with light refreshments beginning at 5:30.

A suggested donation is $25, which includes booklet worth $10.  Also, if finances are a problem, let us know because there may be people wanting to sponsor participants.  We want the message to get out!

Here is an explanation from facilitator, Sandie Brock:

”I am passionate about this for many reasons and have chosen this Stewards of Children training as a way to invest in this issue BECAUSE IT WORKS! It is exciting to know that through this education children will be protected and abuse nearly eradicated from our communities. Research shows that each one of us impacts another ten!  I care about my friends, my community, my faith community and want to be sure that YOU have the opportunity to be educated in this area for the best chance to steward our children.”

Please RSVP to Mandy McLaughlin at hellomandolin@gmail.com including the name(s) of those attending with you.  If you find that you are unable to attend after you RSVP, please contact Mandy.

Sincerely,

Kevin Rains &

Mandy McLaughlin

P.S. The Stewards of Children Class is authorized to offer CEU’s. This training has a CEU approval code for social workers, counselors, and marriage/family licensed therapists. Teachers have been known to receive CEU’s here locally but you should contact someone internally in your district for the approval.

Special Thanks to Don McNeel and his team for their in-kind donation of labor to work on preservation of St. Elizabeth. After spending several hours repairing the roof, his hope is that it is finally water tight. This is a great gift to our community!

friends of vc / 3 Comments

The following is from the Norwood City Schools After School Programs (via Joshua Hanauer):

The 21st Century After School Program is asking the community to participate in our fund raiser! As required by the Ohio Department of Education we are required to raise sustainability funding for our after school programs. All of Norwood City School After School Programs are grant funded.  As we face a $100,000.00 dollar decrease in funding for our Middle School Program next year it is critical we raise funds to keep our program vital and effective.

The Kroger Fund raiser will be ongoing as long as the 21st Century After School Program exists. It is easy, and has the potential to raise substantial money for our program. Buy a $5.00 dollar gift card from us, load it before you shop at Kroger or buy gas and we will receive 4% of every purchase! Cards can be purchased from us&nand used at any Kroger in the United States.

Download the form found on the side and return to the Middle School to the attention of the 21st Century After School Program.

The form can be downloaded from this link.

Chicken Classes at the Civic Garden Center

Posted by Vineyard Central on January 11, 2011
friends of vc / 1 Comment

The following was sent in by Ryan Mooney-Bullock.  As many of you are aware, Norwood City Council is considering a modified Prohibited Animals ordinance, “which will allow residents in owner occupied 1 and 2 family residences to keep chickens.”  I’ve posted this message here because of the high likelihood of interest among our church’s members.  Here’s Ryan:

I wanted to share some upcoming classes at the Civic Garden Center with VC’s many homegrown-loving community members. If you have been plotting your chicken flock for the upcoming repeal of Norwood’s anti-chicken ordinance, the first class will provide you with all the info you need to get started!

Chickens: Selecting Breeds, Ordering Chicks and Setting up for a Laying Flock
Wednesday February 9, 6-7:30pm
Instructor: Madeline Dorger, Youth Education Coordinator
Cost: $10 (free for CGC Volunteers)
This class will cover breeds of chickens for the backyard chicken-keeper and tips for ordering from our local hatchery. Madeline will explain how to care for the chicks once you receive them and provide ideas for setting up your small backyard chicken habitat. Participants, if interested, will be able to submit a combined chick order to Mt. Healthy Hatchery.

Maximizing the Small Vegetable Garden, Part 2
Saturday, January 15, 1:30-3:30pm
Instructor: Kate Cook, Urban Farmer
Cost: $10 (free for CGC volunteers). Previous class not required.
This class will expand on the principles discussed in part one (planning concepts and planting techniques to maximize variety and yield). Participants are encouraged to bring their first round garden design ideas to workshop with Kate and the rest of the class. Estimating quantities for seed ordering and soil amendments will also be covered, as well as feeding and watering schedules.

Seed Exchange
Wednesday February 2, 6-7:30pm
Cost: Free
Bring the seeds you have saved from your garden (all kinds welcome) to exchange with other gardeners. Enjoy swapping stories and seeds from your garden with other like-minded folks. Light refreshments will be provided, feel free to bring something to share. Open to all of our CGC friends: teachers, community gardeners, home gardeners, urban farmers, etc!

If you have questions, feel free to contact Ryan at rbullock@civicgardencenter.org. You can register for classes on our website.

The following is a message from Jeremiah Griswold:

Over the past couple years so many incredible connections have been made between people in the Cincinnati area and La Limonada.

So we thought it would be great to invite everyone to join together for a potluck dinner and Christmas party to benefit Lemonade International’s “Navidad En La Limonada” campaign.  The event will be Friday, Dec 3, from 6-8pm.

We’re looking forward to a great time… including live music, open mic for people who’ve spent time in La Limonada, and an opportunity to learn more about plans for Christmas in La Limonada.

Bill & Cherie Cummings from Lemonade Int’l are excited to be in town for this special event and look forward to meeting/getting to know you.

Bring a dish to share, invite your friends & we’ll see you there!

Upcoming: Formed Kick-off

Posted by Vineyard Central on August 23, 2010
events, friends of vc / No Comments

Kevin Rains sent in the following invitation:

Formed is the outgrowth of several friends working together to flesh out a new curriculum for Christlikeness. Together we developed a year long curriculum based around 12 vows, in the form of a prayer book that immerses us in the Psalms and Gospels. Each month is a different module based around a vow that kicks-off with a guest lecturer.

Our first lecturer is Dave Nixon, who will be teaching on Soul-keeping. Please join us for two hours of teaching and discussion around this important subject. You’ll leave with the knowledge and inspiration to develop healthy habits and rhythms in your life. You’ll also be given a pdf of September’s curriculum that includes daily prayers, readings, and reflections on the vow of soul-keeping…. All that and a belly full of home-made tamales (made by our dear neighbor Maria).

All are welcome.

Cost:
$15 (including tamales) …$10 with a student ID
